What is my name?

My parents named me 杜世杰, written Dù Shìjié in pinyin
. I chose Ryan for use in English-speaking settings. In publications, I combine the two: Ryan Shìjié Dù.

To typeset my name in LaTeX, use
Ryan Sh\`iji\'e D\`u
.

Why the tone marks?

Mandarin is a tonal language, and pinyin tone marks distinguish pronunciations that would otherwise be written alike. Without them, it is harder to tell how to say my name.

I am inspired by observed phenomena in the Earth system and motivated to understand their underlying fluid physics. My interests span the ocean and its interactions with the atmosphere and sea ice. My current research focuses on ocean dynamics, the air–sea interface, and surface waves.

Trained as a mathematician, I approach problems by formulating and analyzing equations, interpreting observational data and model output, and conducting numerical experiments. I particularly enjoy stochastic methods, asymptotic analysis, geospatial statistics, and scientific computing.

I use the Dedalus3

collects write-ups and code for classic simple geophysical fluid dynamics models. It may be useful for learning Dedalus or teaching GFD, and contributions are welcome.
